A New Mississippi Law Will Force Teen Moms to Submit Cord Blood for DNA Testing

Educators, healthcare professionals and lawmakers have been armed with a checklist to find out whether or not a crime was committed. For instance, if a girl refuses to give the father’s name, lists him as unknown or if the man she says is the father of her child denies it. Still, there’s no word on what happens to a girl who refuses to allow doctors to collect cord blood or if she’s even allowed to do that.

Right now, there’s a lot that still seems fuzzy, namely, how the already struggling state will pay for the testing and how exactly teen mothers and their babies will get child support. And it seems like in an attempt to do good, the state may be dragging out into the open something that victims won’t want to deal with. Standing up in court to someone who’s raped you is deeply traumatic and that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Do you think Mississippi’s decision is good for teen moms and their babies? If your daughter were in this situation, what would you advise her to do?
