In the interview (h/t Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports), Richardson explained how those close to him cost him $1.6 million over a 10-month period in 2015:
I finally just looked at my bank statement, and I was just like, ‘Where did this come from? Where did that come from?’ And my guy was sitting there telling me, ‘Man, we was telling you.’ I know he was telling me, but that’s just like telling a kid to stop running in the hall. They’re going to still do it when you turn your back or you leave.
It’s just one of them moments to where I was just blinded by my heart, by loving everybody and thinking that everyone was for me. I know they love me. I know they do care. But at the time, they took advantage of it.
The Ravens announced the release of Richardson Tuesday, and hisNFL future is in question.
Richardson was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and seemed destined to become a perennial Pro Bowler.
He racked up over 1,300 total yards and 12 touchdowns as a rookie, but he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts just two games into his sophomore campaign and never managed to find his footing.
Richardson did not play in 2015 after the Oakland Raiders cut him prior to the season, and he owns a 3.3 yards-per-carry average in 46 career games.
Despite the $1.6 million he lost and the possibility that he may never play in the NFL again, Richardson said in the interview that he is far from broke by virtue of the $20.5 million in guaranteed money he received from his rookie contract.
While Richardson’s NFL future looks bleak, he is still only 26 years of age, and it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that another team could roll the dice on a player who was once viewed as a can’t-miss prospect.
