“Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those impacted by Tre’s loss,” said Delta State University President Daniel Ennis in a statement.
Reed was discovered just after 7 a.m. hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts at the center of campus, according to Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler.
“Pending an investigation, further investigation, and also from the medical examiner’s office, we won’t have more information until that part has been done,” Peeler said.
The Bolivar County coroner’s office has taken custody of Reed’s body. Medical experts are expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.
University officials said grief counselors are available for students and staff, and the campus chapel has been opened for prayer. Ennis added that a prayer service is being organized to give the campus community a space to gather and process the tragedy together.
Classes and all activities were canceled on Monday following the discovery of Reed’s body. This included the events planned around the celebration of the university’s centennial.
Ennis also shared that he would be meeting with the school’s leaders on whether classes and activities would start back up on Tuesday.
Incidents like this can have a significant emotional impact on students, experts say, particularly on smaller campuses where the community is tightly knit. Mental health advocates encourage students to reach out for support and to check in on their peers in the wake of sudden loss.
