When asked about the disproportionate number of people of color killed by police during the town hall, Bush acknowledged that racism still exists in the United States and that leaders need to reach our to disenfranchised groups.
Bush’s response to how he personally connects to racial justice issues was his acknowledgement that “we have serious problems and these problems have gotten worse in the last few years. Communities, people no longer trust the basic institutions in our society that they need to trust to create, to make things work.”
The town hall apparently ended abruptly when chants of “Black Lives Matter” broke out, leading Bush to shake hands and wrap up the event more quickly than usual. Black Lives Matter activists have disrupted multiple political events recently, including a now infamous disruption of a rally held by Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump stated at a fundraiser earlier this week that he would fight Black Lives Matter protesters if they tried to take his microphone. Black Lives Matter activists say that their intent in disrupting political events is to hold 2016 presidential candidates accountable regarding issues of racial justice.
