For years, the Madison School District has been talking about hiring more minority educators, with limited success. But the matter has taken on greater urgency in recent years as the district’s student population has become more diverse and as the gap in achievement between white and minority students has remained large.
In the past, the district piloted a culturally responsive curriculum at Falk and Mendota elementary schools, but the methods have since been integrated in training for teachers in all schools, said Cynthia Green, the district’s executive director of curriculum and instruction.
That includes having the same high standards for all students and “making sure students see themselves in material,” she said.
