Mariota’s decision was wholly unsurprising. He nearly declared for the NFL draft after the 2013 season but decided to return to Oregon, leading the school to the second national title game in program history. The Ducks lost to Ohio State in Monday’s national title game, with Mariota putting up solid if unspectacular numbers.
Questions remain about whether Mariota can develop the pocket-passing skills that are prized by NFL teams, and if his gaudy career numbers were the result of Oregon’s quick-strike offensive scheme. But he’s still expected to contend with Winston to be the draft’s No. 1 pick, a choice held by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
