SolaRoad is testing a 328-foot section of commuter bike path in what could someday lead to roads that generate the electricity for street lights, traffic lights, electric cars, and even households.
Researchers told NPR that this short stretch could meet the electrical demands of two or three houses per year. The power generated is being funneled into the national energy grid.
“SolaRoad is a world first that will put the Netherlands on the map as a leader in sustainable innovation,” Netherlands minister of economic affairs Henk Kamp said Wednesday.
