Utah lawmakers reject push to expand abstinence-only sex ed

The House Education Committee voted 11-2 to reject the measure Tuesday evening, with opponents saying that instruction beyond Utah’s abstinence-only curriculum should be taught by parents at home.

Dozens of supporters showed up to speak for and against the bill Tuesday.

House Minority Leader Brian King of Salt Lake City sponsors the measure and says it would give parents more tools and options to ensure their kids know how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases or unintended pregnancies.

Parents would have to opt-in for their children to be given the instruction.
