LANSING — The state agriculture department did not perform timely inspections of Michigan food and dairy facilities between 2009 and 2012, according to an audit released today.

The report by Auditor General Thomas McTavish said inspection problems, along with inadequate record keeping, meant “food establishments may not operate in a controlled manner to protect consumers from foodborne illnesses.”
