Family members said they had just come home from an outing and were outside near West 53rd and South Aberdeen streets around 7:10 p.m. Monday. Police said that’s when a car pulled up and someone got out and opened fire.
Princeton Chew, 11 months, and his mother, 23-year-old Patricia Chew, were both shot in the side. His 46-year-old grandmother was shot in the leg, a 25-year-old man was shot in both legs and another 25-year-old man was shot in the abdomen.
Two officers made the split-second decision not to wait for paramedics at the scene. They put the boy in the back of their squad car – with his aunt holding him – and rushed him to Stroger Hospital.
“The police officer brought the baby in. He was holding the baby. They was holding him real tight. You could tell right away he had been shot, the way the traffic was,” said Allen Florence, who was in the emergency room at Stroger.
The child’s condition stabilized at the hospital. His mother and grandmother were also taken to Stroger, where they both died. Family members said Patricia Chew was two months pregnant.
The two men were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. One is in critical condition. The other man is stable.
No one is in custody.
