BLACK TRUTH NEWS PICKS THE BEST 25 HIP HOP GROUPS OF ALL TIME (#11-15)

14. Salt-N-Pepa

Salt N- Pepa was the first group that I had to move up on the list. The word “first” is attached a lot to the group’s name. They are not the first all-female Hip Hop group, but they are the first successful female Hip Hop group. Without them, it is quite possible, that the females rappers who followed would not be able to be taken seriously in regards to making an impact and selling records in Hip Hop. Their first album Hot, Cool and Vicious went platinum. I remember first seeing them in the “Push it” video and having a crush on Salt. I know I wasn’t the only kid who felt that way. They combined sex appeal, class, and intelligence in their music. Their second album went gold. Their third album went platinum, their fourth album sold seven million records and their last album went gold. They are the first and only female group to put up those types of numbers in an industry dominated by men.

13. Gang Starr

I think Gangstarr is underrated in Hip Hop. Their name rarely pops up when great Hip Hop groups are mentioned. By the same token Guru doesn’t always get the credit he deserves. I wrote a list of the most underrated emcees in Hip Hop, and he was in my top five. The fact that DJ Premier’s beats were so dope, Guru’s skills got overlooked. Step in the Arena was dope. Daily Operation was doper. Hard to Earn was a classic, and Moment of Truth was a classic.
