The evening that he shot Trayvon, Zimmerman had called Sanford police using a non-emergency phone number that the agency had advised him to use as a Neighborhood Watch volunteer.
Zimmerman told a dispatcher that evening that he was watching a suspicious person and asked police to respond.
A few minutes later, Zimmerman shot Trayvon, an unarmed 17-year-old who was visiting Sanford from his home in Miami Gardens.
Zimmerman told police that he acted in self-defense after the teenager knocked him to the ground, breaking his nose, then climbed on top and repeatedly banged his head on a sidewalk.
