When Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson was initially asked how he felt about players kneeling during the National Anthem, he said “he hope he don’t have those issues” with his players. Criticism followed those comments from Jackson and he followed it up with a prepared statement trying to rectify his stance. “The intent of my comments was not to discourage individual expression from our players in light of a cause that moves them to personal expression. I’m disheartened that I gave anyone that impression because I did not speak with enough clarity.” Jackson said.

In light of his comments, some of his players used their ‘ individual expression’ to take a stand against some of the injustices in this country. About a dozen players kneeled and prayed during a silent protest of National Anthem in a game against the New York Giants. The group included veterans, rookies and backups. Seth DeVale, who was one of two white players to join in said he wanted to “pray for our country” and “draw attention to the fact that we have work to do.” Following the game, coach Jackson responded by saying  “we respect our players; we respect the flag.” No word if the players will continue the protest throughout the season, or if Jackson will tolerate and accept it. “I won’t know about the next game until it happens, but again, this was tonight and we will move on from there.” he said.  To read more about this story click here.
