Colleges Slash Tuition to Eliminate Sticker Shock

Schools experimenting with similar tuition cuts, including Converse College in South Carolina, Washington State’s public institutions of higher education, York College of Pennsylvania, and others, are doing so at a time when the entire higher education landscape is being reimagined, both at the state and federal level.

That private colleges are beginning to reset their tuition shows the difficultly schools are having in communicating to students and their families that the price they see will, in most cases, not be the price they pay, said Catharine Bond Hill, president of Vassar College in New York.

During her tenure, Hill has prioritized making the school more affordable for low-income students. She’s been a vocal critic of resetting tuition, arguing that it doesn’t necessarily make things more equitable for low-income students, and actually benefits wealthy students whose families can afford to pay in full.

“Their applicant pools include lots of families who have benefited in the last 30 to 40 years from rising incomes and they can pay that tuition sticker,” Hill says.
