Free condoms in US high schools: promotes teen sex or protects against STDs?

“I want everybody to understand that doesn’t mean you’re absolved either as a parent or an adult to talk to an adolescent about responsible behavior, respecting who you’re with, and doing what’s right not what’s convenient,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said, as reported on CBS Chicago.

The distribution of condom expansion comes ahead of the school district’s implementation of new sex education curriculum. That mode of study, which incorporates the learning of age-appropriate basics of anatomy, reproduction, having healthy partnerships, and personal safety, will not be available until 2016.

NYC’s health guidelines, for instance, makes it a requirement for school district’s to have condoms available for students. However, if parents would like, on behalf of their children, they can opt out of the program. It seems to have had some positive result in the Big Apple as the teen pregnancy rate is half as much as Chicago’s. The benefits are clear, preventing pregnancy and protecting against sexually transmitted diseases. Still, there is a risk that teens will become more curious about engaging in sexual activities if the proper suppliers are simply a short distance down a school hallway.
