‘Inside’ is No. 1 going into holiday weekend

Inside Out topped Thursday’s box office with $7.7 million, besting three-week champ Jurassic World and newcomers Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys, according to tracking firm Rentrak.

Although No. 1 has eluded the well-reviewed Disney/Pixar blockbuster since its June 19 debut, it has the lead going into the Fourth of July weekend. Inside took third place on Wednesday with $7.5 million and has netted $216.1 million to date.

Not far behind, Jurassic came in second with $6.9 million Thursday. The prehistoric juggernaut continues to defy expectations, amassing $527.2 million in just under four weeks and far surpassing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($453.3 million) as the highest-earning film of the year so far, according to Box Office Mojo.

As for the new openers, not even washboard abs or Arnold Schwarzenegger could get butts in seats. Despite grinding on the competition Wednesday — earning $9.3 million and No. 1 — Magic Mike retreated to No. 4 on Thursday with $5.7 million. The man-candy sequel may finish around the opening of its predecessor, which danced to $39.1 million in three days in summer 2012, on its way to $113.7 million total.

Terminator: Genisys landed in third Thursday with $6.5 million, bringing its two-day total to a disappointing $15.5 million. Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy Ted 2 held the rear with fifth place and $3.2 million ($47.3 million in two weeks).

Weekend estimates are due Sunday.
