Kydd Jones Interview w/ Blacktruth.net

How do you feel about the current events unfolding in Baltimore? Do you think Austin’s capable of such a riot?

Well first off, Baltimore has a lot more black people than Austin. Most of the black people have been forced out of Austin due to rising property values in the East side where black people were forced to live during segregation. There’s an event when there is a relatively large amount of black people in Austin for Texas Relays, and the cops show out for that event way more than they do for SXSW, where you literally have thousands of random people in the streets. The cops will just chill on the streets during SXSW, but for Texas Relays they’ll be on horses with guns ready for it to go down like the end of the world is coming. The situation in Baltimore is sad, though. People will continue to riot as long as police treat members of the black community like second class citizens.

How would you describe your style to someone who’s never heard you?

I would definitely call myself a progressive artist at this point. I’m a producer, singer-songwriter and emcee so I try not to limit myself to just one type of sound. Boom-bap, trap, West Coast, East Coast, I feel like I have a lot of different influences so musically my style is very diverse.

If you could sign with any label which would you sign with and why?

Man, that’s tough. Drake is killing right now with OVO, they’ve got a lot of buzzing artists like Makonnen and PartyNextDoor. Obviously if I signed with GOOD Music that would be awesome since I’m a huge fan of Kanye and what he’s done throughout his career. Also, shoutout to Ab-Soul, Kendrick and the whole TDE camp too, they’re the homies.

As an artist who has performed a lot, what’s the most important piece of advice you can give to people just beginning to perform live?

Be hungry, be consistent, and be willing to learn and grow. Try to always hold yourself to a high standard.
