McDonald’s testing Monster energy drinks in Chicago, other locations

The Oak Brook-based company confirmed it is testing Monster brand energy drinks in about 20 stores, including one in Chicago — the so-called Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s at 600 N. Clark St.

“We’re always gathering feedback from customers on the food and beverages they’d like to be served at McDonald’s and this is another example,” spokeswoman Lisa McComb said in a statement. The Chicago location is the only store in Illinois that’s part of the test.

McDonald’s has expanded its drink offerings in recent years as it tries to get consumers to spend more per visit. The Monster beverages will cost about $1.50 more in a value meal, Evercore IRI analyst Robert Ottenstein said.

McDonald’s has reported falling sales for seven straight quarters, but some analysts believe the world’s largest burger chain is on the cusp of a turnaround after making some bold moves to improve its business, like the nationwide rollout of all-day breakfast. McDonald’s public perception is at the highest point in two years, according to the YouGov Brand Index.

The company reports third-quarter earnings on Thursday.
