Metropolitan Police Chief on Suspect in D.C Shooting: “There are a lot of things we need to know that we don’t know”

Authorities have alleged that Spencer set up a hallway camera to monitor people approaching the unit. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said at a public safety briefing that Spencer had an appliance wedged against the home’s front door to slow anyone trying to enter. Police rammed the apartment’s front door to open it, Contee said.

Officials have claimed that Spencer, who had been identified as a person of interest in the case, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers were entering his apartment Friday, Contee said.

Now it is being said that Spencer had 800 more unspent rounds and three more firearms, including two handguns, at his apartment in the city’s Van Ness neighborhood. Contee said police discovered parts for three more rifles at a second apartment in Northern Virginia.

A 12-year-old girl was shot in the arm, and a woman in her mid-30s and a 54-year-old man were also hit, officials said. A woman in her mid-60s with a graze wound to her upper back was treated at the scene and released.

“I’m thankful we didn’t lose more lives that day,” Contee said at the hearing.

It is not clear what was the motive behind the shooting. Police are still trying to find out how Spencer was able to rent two apartments or buy guns and ammunition. “There are a lot of things we need to know that we don’t know,” Contee said. To read more about this story click here.
