Patchwork Bessie Interview w/ Blacktruth.net

What are the pros and cons of working with artists remotely?

The pros are that you can have an artist record a song across the world in a matter of hours. It is convenient for the artist at times if they have other obligations. The cons are not being able to coach the person in the studio to get a certain emotion or vibe across. Sometimes email doesn’t help or even being in a remote session. I would say that would be the major con. Out of the songs that we’ve recorded so far we’ve only been in the studio with an artist once. That was with Caleb Hawley.

How do you utilize Kickstarter to find artists to collaborate with?

Well, Kickstarter is a place where you would find an artist who is serious about their craft, serious about their career, and talented. That’s how I found Desi. A lot of these artists had projects out. All I did was just ask and Desi agreed. Now I can say, that isn’t always the case. Some of the artists are so committed to their own projects they may not have time to devote to your project.

How do you guys approach the idea of fusing styles without sacrificing what makes them great in the process?

Honestly, we don’t think about fusing styles. We usually start with a drum track or a melody and we build it from there. We just explore and experiment with various sounds, instruments, and techniques. Like I said before we just let ourselves go. We try to make it as organic as possible. However, it comes out as the end result.

What do you think the future holds for Patchwork Bessie?

We will continue to put out quality music for years to come. We will produce unique artists who will go on to do great things. We are just scratching the surface. It’s going to be an exciting journey.
