President Trump spoke about the shooter who killed 26 people in a Texas church yesterday. “I think mental health is the problem here,” Trump said during a news conference, a “deranged” man who should have received treatment. “This isn’t a guns situation.” he continued. By saying that, Trump made the shooter’s situation seem more sympathetic than crazy.  It looks like when white people commit atrocities such as this one, the President doesn’t call the situation what it is. The same way he downplayed the Charlottesville Virginia, he is doing the same thing in this situation. Killing 26 people in a church is act of terrorism, no matter how you spin it. Of course there is some mental issues with anyone who decides to try kill some people. But to not acknowledge this attack as more than a sick person who needed help is ignoring the facts. One of the definitions of terrorism is violence against peacetime targets or in war against non-combatants. Does this not fit the description of that? We have to be aware of the narratives being to describe one set of individuals who commit crimes as opposed to others. Especially when it involves the lives lost of innocent individuals.
