Needless to say I was surprised to learn that a Black man was the gunman in the shooting. 45year old Gary Martin was the Black dude who went into Henry Pratt Co. warehouse and killed five people while injuring more during the shooting. It was reported that Martin was upset that he was getting terminated and brought a gun to the exit meeting.
Unfortunately, I think that a lot of Americans like myself have grown numb to the mass shootings that have occurred in this country. Although you still feel bad for the victims, there has been a decrease in the shock value. Since 2012, there has been at least one mass shooting in this country every year.
Statistics also show most of the shootings have been done by White men. Between 1982 and November of 2018, there have been 107 mass shootings in the United States. 60 of those shootings have been done by a White male. In saying that, my second reaction to the latest killings was based more on reality more than perception.
However, regardless of race, it is always sad to hear about these incidents. Hopefully, not only will there be stricter gun laws; but more emphasis on mental health. My condolences go out to the families in Illinois and I wish the best for them moving forward.
