Family of Man Killed by Police Awarded $4.6 Million In Damages

Rice went on to say that the deputies never lost their temper or control of their actions during the encounter, and they acted in line with the sheriff department’s policies. He continued that all Booker had to do was stop resisting, follow the rules, and behave like the other inmates. The deputies did not know that Booker had a heart condition which was the trigger to his demise, he added.

Although the Rev. Calvin Booker said that the family finally got justice for his brother and he could now rest in peace, Darrold Killmer, the family’s lawyer, said that the community needs to speak up against the continuing police brutality.

The officers responsible for the death of Booker were never charged with using excessive force nor did the department bring any disciplinary measures against them. Department officials claimed that the deputies used necessary force to bring down someone who could have injured himself or others.
