The ribbon-cutting and open house celebration comprised face painting, steppin classes, personal tours, food trucks, and a ceremony with partners, donors, and elected officials. Major community stakeholders, including GPRWC Executive Director Drea Slaughter, Angela Taylor (Garfield Park Community Council), GPRWC Board President Ayesha Jaco, Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderman Jason Ervin (City), Dr. Lee Francis (Erie), Adam Alonso (YMCA), Dr. Omar Lateef (Rush), Penny Pritzker, and Bryan Traubert (Chicago Prize, PTF). The day was full of surprises, including food from Uncle Remus, YMCA membership sign-ups, health screenings, and photo booths.
This past week, GPRWC was also a part of the ribbon cutting at West Madison Roller Rink in partnership with Chicago Park District, Site Design Group, Studio Gang Architects and Alderman Jason Ervin (28th Ward). The community unveiled the newly improved Park No. 602, a revitalized community plaza and roller rink designed to encourage recreation, neighborhood engagement and wellness for Garfield Park residents.
