Pasadena police released 911 call, video from fatal confrontation with bipolar dad

A man who described himself as the brother of Reginald Thomas called Pasadena police around 2:30 a.m. Friday to seek help for the dad of eight, who was acting strangely and carrying a knife around their apartment complex. Thomasdied after cops responding to the distressed call tased himand wrestled him into custody.

In the background of the 911 call, a struggle can be heard. The brother told the dispatcher that Thomas had not threatened anybody with the knife, but noted that he had a history of violence. When asked if Thomas was on drugs, the caller said yes, but he didn’t know what kind.

“He’s high, though,” the brother said, according to a copy of the 911 callobtained by the Los Angeles Times. “I can tell that.”

Pasadena police also released surveillance video of the confrontation. The grainy footage shows officers pacing through the courtyard of the apartment complex.

The brother’s call to police was the second of two reporting the disturbance, police said. Thomas’ girlfriend, Shainie Lindsay, said he had called cops himself when he realized he needed help, although police have not confirmed who placed the first call.
