Rashaan Salaam’s Death Ruled a Suicide, Family Say He Suffered From Depression

The 42-year-old San Diego native’s body was discovered alongside a note that investigators determined he had written, in a park near his University of Colorado alma mater on December 5. The Boulder County Coroner’s report confirmed that his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal driving limit [at 0.25] and that the gunshot wound to his head was self-inflicted.

An interview with Salaam’s family revealed that he had been suffering from depression and was drinking heavily in recent years. Such has been the case for numerous football players who’ve taken their lives and been studied over the past couple of decades to determine whether the trauma inflicted on their brains might establish a direct link between the sport and the circumstances of their deaths. Although signs point to the possibility that Salaam may have suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy [CTE], his family rejected the coroner’s request to perform tests for the degenerative disorder, out of respect for his Muslim faith.
