She said the Defense Department has given away high-powered equipment — such as Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles — without any evidence that such tools are needed and with no assurance that local police know how to use them.
McCaskill said, for example, that a sheriff’s office in Oklahoma with only one full-time sworn officer has received two MRAPs from the Pentagon. Another one-officer agency in Michigan has received 13 military assault rifles, she said.
“That is almost comical it’s so out of bounds,” McCaskill said.
