U.N. refugee body urges Jordan to take in 12,000 Syrians stranded on border as winter nears

The agency is calling on Jordan to let in the displaced, many of them women and children.

Jordan’s government had no comment Tuesday. In recent months, Jordan allowed only small numbers to enter, usually several dozen a day, citing the need for stringent security checks.

The international group Human Rights Watch said recent satellite images confirm thousands are stuck in the border area.

In Geneva, the refugee agency said the lives of refugees will be at risk in the coming winter months if they are not admitted to Jordan. It says the health situation has been deteriorating, with increasing diarrhea and malnutrition among children.
