Don Dale Interview

BTN: I think a solo project will diversify the Elite Society brand. It makes it harder for people to box you guys in a “conscious rapper” box. Can you share the strategy that you guys have when it comes to presenting the music and brand to the public?

DD: As you said, we don’t want to be boxed in a certain category. I want every time you hear something they call us something new and something else. Like you compared us to Dead Prez, the next time we want De La Soul, 2Pac, Biggie and you can keep going. It don’t matter, I want them to name all that.

BTN: With you being a younger artist, how important it is to be knowledgeable of the pioneers that you just named?

DD: I think it is super important, because some of us may not be informed about those people and what they did. But spiritually we are in tune with those people because of my brothers and my cousins. We have the same ancestors and we kind of walk the same life. It’s different but we kind of walk the same path as a Black brother. With that, I just try to keep the balance between the music and the content. Talk about things I have seen, what I lived and what I have been through and inform at the same time.

BTN: Who is doing production on your solo song?

DD: My homie Rell is doing the production on that. He is partners with The Boy Illinois, he did that beat. And we have another song called “Life of a Good Man”

BTN: How difficult has it been for people to be receptive to your music that contains content and a message?

DD: Sometimes they are not that receptive and that’s a different thing. But I was raised to be different and to try different things; go against the grain and I’m a rebel to the end. Until shit change, I am a rebel. That is the hard thing though but I just keep pushing because eventually, people is going to want to get on that new sauce. They gon get in tune because most people follow us anyway. The hardest thing is putting it out there for the people can be receptive.

BTN: So is there a complete solo project coming after the single?

DD: Well Elite Society has the project, the “Time is Now” and that is more of the focus right now. I got projects in the works and I can throw them out if I want to, but I want people to anticipate the project. I take advice from people because I was a fan of the music first; so I like to hear what people got to say. Then I make my decision if I want to go there or not. One of my homies was like I can just put out my project and people will have my project. Or I can just put out songs and people can be like D when you dropping that project? So they anticipating it and checking for it; because we got a ton of music. My main thing is I want to inform the streets more than anything. If I can relate to them, then they not going to hear me.

BTN: Where can people find you guys music?

DD: Go on all the social media and look up werelitesociety with the letter r. Instagram and Youtube the same slash elitesocietymusic. Soundcloud is elitistmusic.com. Check it out. We also are shooting footage for a documentary to save a African based school in Englewood. They teach the children different languages and African dialect. And this some of the these we need for the shorties.
