The mansion, at 3312 Midwest Road in Oak Brook, had been listed by Bank of America after the couple who had bought it from Thomas subsequently lost it to foreclosure. Friday’s deal closed well above the bank’s nearly $2.5 million asking price, and an agent who represented the buyer said there were at least five offers.
However, Friday’s sale price was a far cry from the $7.95 million that Thomas reaped in 2003, when he sold the nine-bedroom mansion to real estate developer Ronald Scarlato. That sale remains the highest price ever paid in DuPage County for a residence.
After Scarlato lost the mansion to foreclosure earlier this year, Bank of America was the lone bidder at a DuPage sheriff’s sale, paying the $3 million opening bid for the mansion and its 3.3-acre parcel. The bank then listed the mansion in October for slightly below $2.5 million.
Bert Gor of Re/Max initially had co-listed the mansion with his colleague, Steve Malik, although he was not the mansion’s co-listing agent at the time of its sale. Gor also represented the buyer, a family whom he declined to identify.
“The buyers are planning to live in it,” Gor said. “There was a tremendous amount of activity. I know for a fact that there were more than five offers.”
Gor touted the mansion’s many unusual features, including a beauty salon, an outdoor tanning area, an eight-person whirlpool in the master suite, a safe room, a dance floor and bar, an actual home theater with two doorways and a ticket booth, and an outdoor pool house.
“It’s a house like no other,” Gor said. “(Thomas) really didn’t spare any expense on it. The buyers got an incredible deal.”
Thomas now spends much of his time in Las Vegas, where he has a home. He continues to own a house in Libertyville that he purchased in 2007 for $1.799 million.
