The Big Fix: I Already Knew Alabama Was Going to Win the National Championship Game…Is Sports Rigged Up?

I knew the Georgia Bulldogs were going to lose, even though they were winning. It wasn’t that Alabama had the ball and were making a surge. It was just that I had a feeling that the  Alabama Crimson Tide was going to win. I knew they were going to win the championship when they somehow made it to the playoffs over teams more deserving with better records. Some people will say that wasn’t a hard guess based on Alabama’s pedigree. With the victory from last night, Alabama coach Nick Saban, has won a record six national championships. He is one of the best recruiters in college football and usually has some of the best talent each year. In short, he and his program are legendary. I guess you can say that he is what Connecticut is to the Women’s college basketball. Or what the New England Patriots are to the NFL.

I understand there is usually one or two dominant teams in each sport at every level. Despite that understanding, I always think back to something my grandfather said to me one day. We were watching Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during their championship run during the 90’s. I vaguely remember the comment that I made, but I recall him replying all sports were fixed. I was a naive teenager and to hear something like that sounded absurd. However, as I got older, I began to look at sporting events from his perspective. I didn’t become a full fledge conspiracy theorist, but I did start noticing things that made me go hmm. I’m not go into every incident that was peculiar. But I will say that the college championship games was one of those times where I figured the tide was going to turn Alabama’s way. I tend to believe that fans favor dynasties and sports leagues cater to that craving. In addition to that, the leagues also recognize big city markets where the ratings and fan support will go up if their team is winning. I’m sure there are more factors and secrets that are buried with Hoffa that contributed to my theory. And until someone proves otherwise, I will continue to believe my grandfather’s wisdom over the referee’s whistle.
