Why you still don’t know who Robert Glasper is and that’s fine with him

Despite his notoriety, some people are unfamiliar with his music. You may hear his name mentioned occasionally but it might have been associated with controversy. For example, in 2018, when he did an interview with 97.9 The Box where he called out Lauryn Hill. You can skip to the 27:39 mark of the video below and hear exactly what he had to say about Ms. Hill.

Last year, I covered the Lauryn Hill show in Atlanta, and I wrote her response to Glasper and critics of her performances and behavior. You can check out my article and Lauryn Hill’s footage here.

Another incident where Glasper’s name came up for the wrong reason happened earlier this year when Chris Brown mentioned his name. Apparently, Chris felt some type after losing out to Glasper at the Grammys. “Who the F*** Is Robert Glasper,” Chris wrote on Instagram in which he added a face with tears of joy emoji.

“Y’all playing. Who da f**k is this? Ima keep kicking y’all ass! Respectfully,” Chris added along with another statement about playing an instrument.

Shortly after, Brown sent an apology to Glasper’s DM and posted it on IG.

“Congratulations my brother… I would like to apologize if you took offense to my reaction at the Grammys. You were not the intended target and I know I came off really rude and mean.”

He continued, “After doing my research I actually think you’re amazing… the organization isn’t doing us Blacks our due diligence. You and I should never be in the same category… two totally different vibes and genres. So from one Black man to another, congratulations. Hope you are able to feed your family for life. God bless my G.”

It’s one thing to do your research and find out how well-respected Glasper is as a musician. It’s another thing to check him out and see him do his thing. I got a chance to do the latter this summer at the Hyde Park Fest in Chicago.

I’m not going to lie; Glasper’s music might not be for everyone. It’s just a smooth groove that’s centered around Jazz with Hip Hop elements and some pop covers included.

He brought out Lalah Hathaway which made his show that much more dope.

Afterward, I got a chance to briefly talk with Glasper and ask him about his show and among other things Lauryn Hill! Check out his response below.

Walking away, I understood that Glasper knows that some people don’t know him and that’s fine with him.
