Over the last ten years, there has been a slight uptick in the number of Black directors who have been given the opportunity to direct high-budget films in Hollywood. According to Variety, there was a 270% increase between 2017 and 2018 in Black directors who were behind the top 100-grossing films of those respective years. Despite the significant increase, Black directors only represented 14% of the total of directors behind the top movies.
