Besides, it seems to be working, at least in the outlying areas.
The New York Times reported last summer that while the urban area of Grants Pass is slowly devolving into chaos, rural regions in the county with vigilante style patrols claim to have all but eradicated crime. Which makes sense – if you were a petty criminal, you’d likely much rather deal with an understaffed city PD than an armed-to-the-teeth self-appointed anti-crime militia.
There are options, of course. The county could vote to initiate a sales tax, or raise property taxes – a measure that was rejected last year. For now, they’ll take the volunteer CSI and community-sourced law enforcement. But from the outside, this can-do attitude looks a lot more like the Wild West than any sort of Libertarian paradise.
