Sexyy Red at the BET Hip Hop Awards Represents the Huge Female Shift in the Rap Business

I clicked on the video and I watched it and honestly, I thought it was a parody song. In my opinion, it was so simplistic that it seemed comical.

Even Sexy Redd was surprised at the success of the song. “I was shocked, yeah. I didn’t think it was going to take off how it did,” she told Vibe.

“When I made it I was like, ‘This hard, I think this the one.’ And some of my people was like, ‘No, this isn’t it. This ain’t serious. She continued: I was just shocked. I was really shocked. I’m still shocked at how it turned up. I’m still surprised.”

Fast forward to the end of 2023 and I not only realize that Sexy Redd’s video was real, but also the instant fame that has been associated with her and other female rappers.

It is an unprecedented time in Hip Hop. I can’t recall a time when there were so many women has achieved success or notoriety in the rap business at one time.

Call it a wave or a fad, but right now seems like the perfect time for a young Black Woman to twerk in a video with her friends while rapping about almost anything and get famous. Of course, that formula doesn’t represent all of the current female rappers.

There are some women out there with some substance to their music. On the other hand, there is a significant amount of female artist who has followed this formula, if not through their music, then through their visuals.

Some fans have criticized the trend, while others have enjoyed it.

I can’t say that I’m on either side. I think I’m somewhat in the middle. I have respect for the hustle, but also feel there should be more effort put into the creativity of their art.

Either way, artists like Sexy Redd are here and she was on the main stage at this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards.
