Tyshawn Lee memorial burned, mother defends new car purchase

Tyshawn Lee was shot and killed last week in an alley in the Gresham neighborhood.

Chicago police say he was lured there and executed as part of an on-going gang dispute involving his father, Pierre Stokes. Stokes has insisted to WGN that he is not involved with any gangs, and he does not know who killed his son.

A friend of Lee’s mother, Karla Lee, set up a GoFundMe page to pay for Lee’s funeral. More than $17,000 was raised.

Some people on social media are now accusing the boy’s mother of using the money for a new car.

Karla Lee posted several profanity-laced videos on Instagram, insisting that she used her own money. She also said that people who do not support her, should just leave her alone. Those videos have since been removed.

Tyshawn Lee’s funeral is on Tuesday at St. Sabina Church.

Father Michael Pfleger set up a separate GoFundMe page to help contribute to the reward money, for information leading to an arrest in the case.  The reward has now surpassed $55,000.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out early Sunday morning at the site where Lee was murdered. It destroyed a memorial that was set up for Lee, and a neighboring garage.

The Chicago Police lieutenant says the fire was caused by one of the candles left at the memorial site.
