Interview with Brooklyn Rapper VNova

BTN: I’ve been to New York a few times but I haven’t visited Brooklyn that much. From a lifelong Brooklyn resident can I get some advice on where to go and what to do?

VN: Well there are major food spots to go to. This is a big city, so it’s not like everybody knows everybody. The main advice I would give someone is to act like you have been here before. You can’t be a tourist; you have to know what you want and when you want it; that’s how it is in New York. Everybody got that attitude, like a chip on their shoulder.

BTN: And when is the new joint dropping?

VN: We looking for the middle or end of July. We are finishing up the artwork as we speak, but first, we dropping these singles. We got the “You died” with Uncle Murda, and then I want to get Terminology on a single. Maybe after we drop those two joints, then we will put the album out.

My main thing is I don’t want to be judged by one record. Say, for instance, the first thing you hear is the song with Uncle Murda and you may think that’s what I’m all about the hardcore thing. I got so many different types of songs; I don’t want to be judged on one record. I want to be judged on the collection of work I do.
Plus we are doing so many live shows throughout the city. You know I’m working with the band MJT, right?

BTN: No

VN: Yeah they’re called Michael Jazz Trio, three young brothers out here doing their thing. They have been on Apollo and everything, my manager is cool with their manager, so they hooked everything up.

We have been doing a lot of shows together and it has been the next level. Similar to how the Roots do it, but just a little bit crazier because we incorporate Rock and R&B into the show too. Eventually, I’m going to drop a series called ‘Midnight in Brooklyn’ with them. One of the brothers plays drums, the other on the keyboard, and one is blowing the Sax. So be on the lookout for that, I definitely want to check it out.
