Gucci’s Latest Ad Campaign Uses Only Black Models, But Still Have Us Dancing

On the other hand, it seems that whenever white people, more specifically white companies and corporations want to showcase Black culture, they do so by showing us dancing and singing. The perception is that our “Soul” only involves us beatboxing and doing the Electric Slide. The lack of depth can be insulting to our spectrum of experiences and our actual culture. Especially if it is centered in the decade of the 1960s. A decade that had slogans like “Black Power” and “Black is Beautiful.”

The lack of opportunities for Black peoples in certain fields such as fashion, make us rationalize the presentation. We chop it up to naïve white executives who might not know or care to present a fair representation of our people. I understand the notion of taking what you can get. However acceptance without mentioning the problem, only makes the cycle worse. Only through recognizing and correcting will a fair presentation of our “Soul” consistently be presented to the mainstream.
